Limits and errors
Law1 meters scarce reads on the org and rate-limits abuse on the User. When something fails, the product may show a code. Quote that code to support.
This page is the intro. The catalog of user-visible codes is Error codes.
What is metered
Two org-level meters:
- View — first entitled body open of a judgement in the current period
- PDF — first original PDF download of that judgement in the current period
Search hits and snippets never consume views. Opening or downloading the same judgement again in the same period does not take another unit of that meter.
Included pools reset each period and do not roll over. They do not grow when you buy seats. After the pool: spend credits for that meter, or the action is blocked (no silent overage bill). Owners buy credit packs or change plan on Billing; Members see usage only.
Free has no included PDF pool unless PDF credits remain. Zero-org Users have no Free plan and no view or PDF pool — create or join an org first.
Display on Billing shows remaining and cap for the included pool, and remaining-only for credits. Those two are not added into one leftover number.
Amounts and period length are on Pricing and Billing and plans.
When you are blocked
Typical cases:
- This org’s content grants do not include that Court or bucket — it will not show in search either
- View or PDF pool and credits are both empty — an Owner can buy credits or upgrade
- You are on Free or Basic and the control is a Pro feature (projects, stars, comments)
- A request is refused for abuse protection (too many reads or downloads in a window)
Blocked reads should tell you to quote the code. Do not treat a grant miss as a site outage.
Error codes
Error codes lists user-visible codes with plain-language meaning and what to do. In-app errors (as those UIs ship) may deep-link a heading on that page or prefill Contact.
Contact support
Contact — pick Access/errors for product failures, and put the code in the error-code field. You can also mail [email protected].
